How to Prepare Your Home for Moving Day: A Week-by-Week Checklist

Moving day gets much easier when the work is spread out over several weeks. Instead of leaving everything for the final few days, use this moving checklist to handle one group of tasks at a time. A little planning now can save you from rushed packing, misplaced essentials, and last-minute surprises later.

Four Weeks Before Moving Day

Start by deciding what is actually coming with you. Go room by room and separate your belongings into items to keep, donate, sell, recycle, or throw away. Removing things you no longer need means fewer boxes, less clutter, and less time spent loading and unloading.

●   Create a moving folder for estimates, receipts, schedules, and important contact information.

●   Measure large furniture and the doorways, hallways, elevators, and staircases at your new home.

●   Gather boxes, packing paper, tape, markers, labels, and protective materials.

●   Confirm your moving date and request time off from work if needed.

●   Book professional movers early, especially if you are moving during a weekend, holiday, or busy season.

Three Weeks Before Moving Day

Begin with items you do not use every day. Seasonal decorations, books, artwork, extra linens, rarely used kitchenware, and off-season clothing are good places to start. Pack one room at a time so boxes stay organized and are easier to place in the correct rooms at your new home.

●   Label every box with its destination room and a short description of its contents.

●   Use clear labels such as Fragile, This Side Up, or Open First when needed.

●   Keep important records, medication, jewelry, cash, and personal documents separate from the moving truck.

●   Arrange utility transfers, internet service, mail forwarding, and address changes.

Two Weeks Before Moving Day

At this point, most nonessential items should be packed. Focus on the rooms that usually take the longest, including the kitchen, garage, basement, closets, and storage areas. Use smaller boxes for books and other heavy items so they are safer and easier to carry.

●   Use towels, packing paper, or bubble wrap to protect dishes, glassware, and other fragile belongings.

●   Take photos of electronics before disconnecting cables so setup is easier later.

●   Use up refrigerated and frozen food and safely dispose of items that cannot be moved.

●   Confirm parking, elevator access, building rules, and any required moving permits.

One Week Before Moving Day

The final week is about finishing the packing and making the home ready for the movers. Confirm the date, arrival window, addresses, phone numbers, and any special instructions with your moving company. Let the movers know about oversized, delicate, or unusually heavy items before moving day.

●   Finish packing everything except the items you will need during the final few days.

●   Create an essentials box with toiletries, chargers, basic tools, paper products, snacks, and a change of clothes.

●   Remove wall decorations, curtains, and detachable shelves.

●   Empty and clean appliances according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

●   Set aside hardware from disassembled furniture in labeled bags and keep it with the matching piece.

●   Make a simple room plan for the new home so movers know where large furniture should go.

The Day Before Moving

Walk through every room, closet, cabinet, attic, garage, and outdoor storage area. Make sure boxes are closed, clearly labeled, and not blocking walkways. Keep anything traveling with you in a separate area so it is not loaded by mistake.

●   Charge your phone and keep chargers within reach.

●   Pack a small overnight bag for each person in the household.

●   Place keys, documents, valuables, medication, and moving paperwork together.

●   Prepare water and simple snacks for moving day.

●   Get a good night’s rest. Tomorrow will be busy.

On Moving Day

Give the movers a quick walkthrough before loading begins. Point out fragile items, furniture that needs to be disassembled, belongings that are not being moved, and any areas that require extra care. Keep children and pets in a safe, quiet space away from doors and walkways.

●   Keep your phone nearby and remain available to answer questions.

●   Check rooms, closets, cabinets, and storage areas as they are cleared.

●   Review the inventory and moving paperwork before the truck leaves.

●   Complete one final walkthrough and make sure windows and doors are secured.

●   At the new home, direct boxes and furniture to their labeled rooms before unpacking begins.
